Dealing With The First Day Of Daycare

By Meagan Smith

When it comes to the first day of daycare every parent reacts differently. Many feel guilty while others don't stop hugging their child at the door. Moms are a bit more loving than usual because of the concern of leaving their child in a new environment. Which is why when it comes to the first day your attitude is everything. Children will be scared and it's your job to maintain a positive attitude the entire few days.

It's no secret that children are all great observers and if they sense that you are worried or in distressed they will feel the same and fear will be much worse for them. Think about perhaps sending your partner if you are feeling anxious about leaving your child in daycare those first few days. You can also create a fun routine the night before and create positive expectation with your child by helping him or her get everything ready.

Once in daycare, don't leave without assuring your child that everything is fine and you'll be there in a few hours. Give the child a kiss and a hug with a big smile, and tell them to have a good day. Some children will cry and try to follow their parents. Do not even think to stay with your child to try to comfort him or her if that's the care, it will only make it worse.

Once is time to pick up the child, it is important that parents are very aware of what happened during the day. Ask your child if he had a good day and whether they met new children, made new friends and what kind of activities he participated in. Gradually your child will get used to your new routine and every day will be easier but you must start slowly and as the days pass they will begin showing increasing enthusiasm and interest.

We recommend you follow these tips as much as you can because those first few days are never easy. However the experience and the new things your child will learn as a result of your understanding and effort will help him to see the value and fun side of going to daycare.
