Exotic Shorthair Kittens Are Popular Pets For Good Reason

By Henry Young

Cat lovers will argue that feline pets are preferable to their canine counterparts because cats are more self-sufficient, independent, and don't require walking every day. Among cat lovers, some swear by the long haired variety, and others will have only short haired animals. Individuals who are attracted to the look of Persians, but are concerned these cats are too difficult to maintain, might be interested in some of the exotic shorthair kittens that are so popular today.

Over a period of time Persians were bred with American Shorthairs, Russian Blue, and Burmese cats to create a short haired cat that appeared, in every other way, just like a Persian. They are now the second most popular cat according to surveys. The Cat Fancier's Association recognizes the Exotics, as they are referred to, as a legitimate breed.

Exotics are quiet animals, but they tend to display more energy than Persians. The cats are playful and love interacting with their owners. Like most other breeds, Exotics spend a lot of time asleep. They are content to be on their own while their owners are out of their house for work, school, or play. Since these felines are gentle and good natured, they tend to live well in families with young children. They can also coexist with other pets in the household.

A number of the physical problems that can plague this breed are a result of the flat facial composition they possess. Breathing issues, jaw misalignment, and tearing eyes are not uncommon. They are also vulnerable to ringworm, kidney disease, and skin inflammations.

Although they have much shorter coats than Persians, Exotics still need regular grooming. They should be brushed and combed often to keep their fur healthy and shining. All cats need to have their teeth brushed every day if possible, but certainly once a week. Getting them used to it early will make the job easier later on. Exotics should be considered inside cats only, especially if their claws have been removed. Defending themselves effectively against predators is not something that comes naturally to most of them.

Shorthairs are round all over. They have full, round heads and sturdy, rounded bodies with short, stocky legs. Not all Exotics look the same. Some have more extreme appearances than others. Extreme Exotics have flatter faces that can cause breathing problems. These are the Exotics most people show in the ring. The traditional Exotics have less flat faces and lower noses. This structure allows them to breath more easily.

Exotics come in several colors. If they are white, their eyes will be copper or bright blue. Some of the white coated felines have an eye of each color. Interested buyers will not find true blue eyed Exotics with any other coat color. All of the rest have copper eyes.

Cats are a lot of fun to have around. When they are not sleeping and eating, most enjoy the company of their owners. Exotics, as well as the other breeds, make loving, devoted, and long time companions.
