You saw a dachshund puppy for sale sign earlier and you are thinking that this might be the right dog for you at this time. Before you do go out and buy that dog however, do read on more about this particular breed before making a commitment.

When you have somewhat decided on a budget for your puppy purchase, allocate anywhere from two hundred to one thousand dollars for it. This is because the price range is determined by overall local and regional supply and demand conditions, the bloodline of the puppy and also overall prestige and reputation of the specific kennel it will come from.

This dog came about in the seventeenth century in Europe when a hunting hound or dog was needed for small burrowing prey. The dachshund, which is literally called the badger hound, has a sausage like body that enables it to wriggle down holes and burrows where hares, rabbits, possums and badgers run to in order to hide. As it Is originally a hunting hound, it is still classified as such in international canine registers.

Upon maturity it will weigh around sixteen to thirty two pounds. It will also achieve a height of eight to nine inches from the shoulder down when it does reach adulthood. Classified as a small dog, be aware that this dog will also be prone to small dog syndrome.

This dog being prone to small dog syndrome, will exhibit a set of behaviors that are acted on to compensate for their small size and statures. Small breed dogs compensate for their size by being more active and playful, and sometimes even more aggressive. For the dachshund it can be even more aggressive as its hunting hound genes will compound the condition. This therefore makes them the second most aggressive canines on the planet as they have been known to bite strangers and even snap at their owners.

They do however make good family dogs and are also good with children due to their playfulness, despite their apparently aggressive natures. You should however always keep an eye on them as they will maintain their aggressive demeanor when it comes to strangers and animals who are outside their immediate family circle. You may also have to get used to their incessant barking and howling at times also.

This particular breed has legendary wanderlust. What this means is that if it has the opportunity to walk around its own, it will do so and probably it will never return. Thus if you want to keep it in a yard, it is best to have it fenced in or on a leash at least. Many do opt to keep this dog inside due to its small size, but you should make this decision with a bit of caution. By keeping the dog indoors a majority of the time will cause it to be obese and unhealthy. Thus when keeping it inside, ensure that it has a good balanced diet and that it also gets plenty of exercise.

In conclusion, this article has hopefully given you enough information to make you mull over your final step towards a purchase and a lasting commitment. Should you feel that this article is still somewhat lacking, then feel free to do additional research on other key issues like grooming and health complications for example.
