Rome, Italy, is one of the greatest cities on earth. It's close to other famous places, but many visitors choose to focus on this magnificent center of art, architecture, history, and culture. There are so many sights to see and fun local activities in Rome that it doesn't even have to cost a lot to have a memorable time.

There are so many sights that you just have to see that just hitting the highlights takes a week. There's no way you can go to Rome and not climb the Spanish Steps and throw a coin into the Trivoli Fountain. Of course you need to see the Colosseum for yourself and walk through the Forum. An ancient acqueduct or two are essential. All those boring history classes will suddenly make sense.

The Piazza del Popolo is an urban plaza designed with stone and with graceful poplar trees, a concept of mingling man made structures and nature that endures to this day. This great plaza is at the hub of three major roads, one of which is the famous Via del Corso. The people of Rome take their evening stroll here and greet their friends and neighbors. It's fun to people watch, but the windows of the shops that line this street may be even more compelling. It's easy to see why Italian leather and fashions are famous.

It will probably be easy to find a festival no matter when you visit. Rome, Of course, is a major religious center, and the celebrations of Good Friday, Easter, and Christmas are amazing. For instance, at Christmas there are a hundred nativity scenes throughout the city.

Every district of Rome has its own patron saint. The saint's day is celebrated every year. There is singing, dancing, and feasting during the celebration. These are great ways to meet local residents and really get to know this facet of Roman culture.

The January Jazz Fest is a non-religious event that has become a tradition. Although winters in Rome can be cold and wet, walking is usually still feasible. Many people prefer to visit during the off-season when the summer crowds are gone and the city is more truly itself. Taking a train or bus to nearby attractions is a good way to see other parts of the city and the countryside.

everyone likes dining out. Food is one of the best things about visiting Rome. There are elegant restaurants and family-run trattorias at every turn. Roman cuisine is rich and satisfying, and the servers take a personal interest in your enjoyment. Take the opportunity to find out all about true Italian pasta. Saving room for one of the amazing desserts is difficult.

For those who have the stamina, there are literally museums too numerous to visit. Many celebrate the ancient days of this great city and its empires, but you can find one for any subject you find interesting. The Vatican museum is like overkill. You could spend every waking minute there and not see even cover the high points. You'll be stuffed full of history, beauty, and wondrous sights in this place where even the corridors hold treasure.
