By Michelle Parker

When summer rolls around it has become a tradition for some parents or guardians to send their children to other places to spend their vacation time. There are numerous life lessons and benefits that children can learn from various organizations and workshops during this time. Not only will they learn something new, they also have fun doing it.

Aside from enrolling in classes and other programs, there are those that are organized that doubles as a camp site for these children. They offer them with all the facilities they need for sleeping, bathing, dining, and other miscellaneous hobbies. Often times, Summer Camp Katy is located somewhere in wooded areas, to allow full immersion. Found below is a list of fun activities to do when sent away on this program.

A common tradition that has been around since it the concept was first created is conducting various arts and crafts. This is varied and has a wide range of possibilities and projects to do. Kids are encouraged to unleash their creativity through composing poetry and songs, taking nature walks to sketch and paint the scenery, and creating jewelry out of string and beads.

Campsites are usually in a largely forested location, filled with trees, animals, and other forestry. Due to this, participants are given a chance to be closer with mother nature and value its simple beauty. As such, instructors will often discuss with them pressing issues regarding nature like global warming. Following these discussions, lake and forest cleanups are done, as well as planting new seedlings to grow.

The advantage with this setting is having enough space to do a number of physical programs and games. This includes fencing, marathons, and swimming in a lake. This not only teaches children and preteens that value of teamwork and leadership, it also gives them the chance to exercise and soak up the vitamins from the sunlight.

Some campsites specialize in certain subject areas. Aside from art, some of them focus primarily on the talents of young kids who have a strong inclination towards music. This means teaching them how to properly play music using different musical instruments. This generally entails the guitar, flute, drums, bass, violin, and more. There are also vocal lessons for people who love to sing.

Aside from more physical programs, there is also sufficient time in teaching them self sufficiency skills. This entails learning how to sew rips and seams, how to hand wash their own clothes, cook certain meals, and other basic survival skills. This is useful not only in more modern applications, but also in case they find themselves in a tricky situation in the future, especially in rural areas.

Since there are usually bodies of water nearby like waterfalls and lakes, the organizers take advantage of this opportunity to allow boys and girls to swim. They can conduct games like water volleyball, or swimming contests. Aside from that, they will often have canoes or paddle boats for the kids to use. This also allows them to remain refreshed from the summer heat.

Another common tradition is conducting bonfires every night. This allows campers to bond amongst each other by telling stories and singing songs with a guitar. In fact, a tradition is telling each other scary stories about the area and other superstitious tales.
