Even if you have never owned one of these little dogs, you have probably admired them for being so fluffy and cute. Pomeranians are popular in part because once you pick one up, you do not want to put it down. They usually weigh about five pounds, but may appear larger due to their crazy, long fluffy coat. Some people have the misconception that Pomeranians are barkers. Just about every breed of dog barks, and these pets are no exception to that rule. However, they are usually barking at some stimulus and can be made quiet with some attention from their owner. It is true that Pomeranians left alone will bark incessantly. They have been bred to be lap dogs and require human attention. People who are gone all day are not the best candidates to adopt these pets.

These dogs are not self reliant, and a good owner is committed to giving the pet all the needed attention and care. The breed has a relatively long life span of twelve to sixteen years. The German Spritz dogs are the Pomeranian ancestors, but the Poms, as they are called, have been selectively bred to become a small, indoor lap dogs.

Poms come in various colors ranging from white to black with a lot of in-between shades. Some of the puppies have a solid colored coat and others are mostly white, reddish or black with random splashes of other contrasting colors. The dogs are very cute and lovable. The breeders tend to be very caring and affectionate with the puppies. The best breeders will not keep the pups in cages.

An Oklahoma City breeder likes to breed the puppies to be a little larger than usual. This breeder think it makes for a stronger pet. They specialize in Poms that are called parti or exotic. The parti puppies have lightly colored coats wtih some dark areas over the body for a sort of calico effect.

The exotics come in many colors, such as chocolate, sable and blue to name a few. A color combination called merle means the dog has a coat with a base color of red or brown or black with other some lighter colors added to create a kind of mottled effect.

Often toy breeds may be prone to health problems. Happily the Pomeranian is amazingly sturdy for such a small dog. They are known to be friendly to humans, but may exhibit some aggressive behavior to other dogs. Since they are so small, Poms are not really capable of doing damage.

Most breeders do not like to ship the animals. They understand what a traumatic experience this can be for the puppy. New owners typically go the the breeder to pick up their new bundle of joy. This pet will be in your life for years come and bring a lot of love and happiness to your family.
