Facts Regarding Erectile Dysfunction FL Residents Should Understand

By Kevin Stone

Sexual stimulation is considered an automatic trigger for erection in men. This is true for most of them but in a few there is a marked difficulty in initiating and maintaining a penile erection for them to engage in sexual intercourse. This is what is referred to as erectile dysfunction or simply, ED. If they are struggling with erectile dysfunction FL residents need to understand a number of things on the condition.

Failing to achieve or sustain an erection does not always mean that one has a problem. As a matter of fact a normal individual would have these challenges if they are anxious or are handling some form of psychological stress. Normalcy is usually restored as soon as the challenge has been dealt with. The likelihood of ED is increased if the problem is experienced on a regular basis. The opinion of a fertility specialist should be sought early.

There are many different causes of ED that are classified as physical or psychological. The former refers to causes in which a medical condition or disease has been established. Such condition will include, for instance, hypertension, diabetes, obesity, multiple sclerosis, elevated cholesterol levels in the blood, coronary heart disease and alcoholism among others. Conditions that are classified under psychological causes include depression, stress, poor communication and anxiety.

Erectile dysfunction is a problem that will result in complications that affect the individual, their partner and the relationship. An unsatisfactory sexual relationship is a common cause of constant psychological stress and disagreements between couples. The problem may also lead to low self-esteem for the man that is likely to spill over to other aspects of life including their career. Perhaps the most important among them is the fact that getting a pregnancy in the natural way may not be possible.

The doctor has to do a number of things to make a diagnosis of ED. One of the most important steps is to get a medical history with a bias to the sexual history. A physical examination then follows and this seeks to establish the anatomical integrity of the reproductive organs. Blood tests and radiological images often come last and help with, among other things, screening for possible medical conditions that may cause or worsen this condition.

The treatment of ED is determined by the established or suspected cause as well as its severity. In cases where the cause is taking too long to identify, treatment may be initiated and the investigations allowed to go. The patients should discuss the available options with their doctor so as to have as much information as possible on the benefits and risks of each of them.

Oral medications are often the first line therapy for most patients. Commonly used drugs include avanafil, vardenafil, tadalafil and sildenafil. These medications potentiate the effects of a chemical known as nitric oxide. The chemical is released during sexual stimulation and plays the role of relaxing the muscles of the penile shaft. Once this happens blood enters the organ and causes an erection.

There are several other alternatives that can be considered. Self-injections of alprostadil or phentolamine can achieve effects that are comparable to those seen with sildenafil. For men that have been established to have low levels of testosterone hormone, synthetic forms can be provided. Penile pumps and implants are usually used a last resort. For the psychological causes, couples counselling is recommended.
